Self Employment: So Far…

Self Employment - Thoughts
As I said on my first ever post here, I left full-time employment from The Moving Picture Company on Friday 12th March 2010. It was a huge step for me personally, I had to sacrifice a beautiful Ford Focus 58 Plate Convertible, save up and pay off my debts and bills all so I was ready for the big day when I got out of London. I guess this post is about whether or not it’s working for me, am I enjoying life!

So it’s been around a month and a half so far since I left London. What’s happened since then:

  • Worked on a brilliant project for me to learn with: ck_schedule
  • Met and worked with some brilliant people (Rob from Assent Media, Matt from Pixelwork)
  • Had some really great support and enquiries from friends of old work colleagues which have led to some nice work
  • Current clients (after I spread the word) getting back in touch and congratulating me on making the jump and thus offering me more work to take on (thank you CLC Construction, Ambition Motorsport etc)

How am I feeling about the whole thing? Well I love it. I’m not earning as much just yet but then again working from home means my outgoings have sky-dived, I am no-longer paying £2800 a year on train fares, no longer paying around £5+ a day for lunch. No longer do I have to pay money for taxi each day to get to the train station (fair enough, I could have walked but I’m very lazy when it comes to that sort of thing).

What I’m Doing Now

Currently I’m working on a massive project to revamp and beautify Ambition Motorsport. Got some brilliant designs which Paul and I are working on together and hoping to get this all underway and built from the ground up! It’s going to be the biggest website I’ve built to date and I’m going to be giving it my all so that I’m nice and proud and so that it truly serves its purpose for Paul who works very hard to make Ambition one of the finest Karting Teams the UK has to offer!

I’ve had more time to put into The Peppermint Apes, we’ve written:

  • Simon Mayo Radio Ident
  • Janice Long Ident
  • Shaun Keaveny Radio Ident
  • A Birthday Song for Janice Long
  • Backing For The Princes Trust - Rap Song

Additionally it looks like we’re all set for a possible paid-for trip to the states in August to meet Matt Leblanc (Joey from Friends) and Sacha Baron Cohen (Bruno, Borat etc). There’s big things coming that way too!

It’s surprising when people say you live to your mean, it’s really true. I thought I’d find it really hard to live on what I am living on at the moment but it’s surprisingly comfortable and easy. So for people considering self-employment, get some clients behind you, save a bit of cash for those important direct debits and ‘just do it’. You will not be disappointed and it’s better to try something and fail than regret not trying it for the rest of your life! Thanks to my beautiful girlfriend and my brilliant family for their continued understanding and support with my venture.

It’s been a long post, but people have been asking how it’s going and so I thought I’d write a post to highlight what I’ve been doing and how I’m feeling which is: AWESOME!

Till next time readers!
