Photoshoots: A New Challenge
posted by davzie in Photography, Work Life

Wednesday 17th March (two days ago from this posting) was an interesting learning experience for me. I spent the day working closely with Rob from Assent Media who is overseeing a brochure which is to be made promoting three new diplomas, Hair and Beauty, Business, Construction / Engineering.
He kindly asked me to attend the three schools in the Essex area and take photos of the students for the brochure, we visited King Edmunds, Appleton and Prospects College.

Overall the first shoot was (I feel) very good and productive. Perhaps the most difficult situation I came across was getting some of the students in a position that looked good on camera but still detailed exactly what they were doing.
Photography isn’t really my expertise, I’ve created many more websites than I have been on photo-shoots but I did enjoy the work and it really hits home that you can be the best photographer in the world but if you can’t command your subjects to move and get arranged in the correct way then you’re never going to get the shot you need (only of course if the photography in question is for a specific purpose)!

I’ve figured out that I also need some more kit if I’m going to be taking on more photography work.
Here’s what I do have:
- Canon EOS 450D
- Kit Lens (18mm – 55mm)
- Manfrotto 190 XBPROB Tripod
I’m going to need:
- Flash Gun (charging that flash is a killer)
- Sigma 18-250mm Lens
Not much more but it all adds up. Anyhow, if you’re local to the area and have the fortunate responsibility of having kids then you might see this brochure from Rob with my photos in. Enjoy!
Spend as much money as you can on a lens. That’s Sigma’s for amateurs, you need a V. wide angle AND a telephoto and it should be fast i.e down to 2.8 at least.
I’m sure the visit to my office was the highlight of the day!
the best Telephoto lens that i have used on an SLR is the Canon EF 70-200 F/2.8 lens. Best image quality ever.;–
